Children at the Young V&A

Young V&A

Tomorrow’s creative minds are shaped today at Young V&A

This inspiring, imagination-fuelling gallery is dedicated to budding artists – and to play. Little ones can hop from Play Gallery to the Imagination Playground, reading nooks to the mini-Museum – dressing up and performing at the Stage before rocketing into the joyful Imagine Gallery. Pram parking, picnic-friendly Town Square Café and a pocket money-perfect gift shop wrap up a truly family-friendly day.

Roll up your sleeves

The Young V&A describes itself as a ‘doing museum’ – no tweens on screens here. A vast central hall full of light and colour forms the heart of the building. Towering letters spelling ‘Design’, ‘Imagine’ and ‘Play’ proudly set the agenda, which is all about getting children involved, hands on, and inspired. The museum was designed with and for children, and they’ll delight in the details. Most of the exhibits are interactive, from sensory play zones to a self-portrait station. Meanwhile, cabinets displaying the toys of yesteryear provide happy nostalgia for any adults in tow.

Explore Japanese folklore

Opening mid-October, the Young V&A’s first exhibition promises to delight all ages. Japan: Myths to Manga invites you on a journey through Japan’s folk tales, legends, and landscapes. A culture that’s firmly in touch with its inner child is carefully curated – cue Tamagotchis, Hello Kitty and Nintendo. Keep little hands busy with origami-making, taiko-drumming and manga-drawing activities.
